UMBILD is a hybrid word that serves as a title for a hybrid artistic research project. An experimental collaboration that gives new expression to existing artworks, represented in the form of media-installations.

A mix between properties and practice, between depicting and rebuilding, between the German 'bild' and the English 'build', between the role as spectator and as participant, between finding and creating, between then and now. Ab- um- ver- bildung in a metamodernist time. Umbildung as a metamorphosis of artistic components.

Umbild has resulted in a process exhibition in Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle (NL) from February to September 2026. The Fundatie's own collection served as the field of research, from which three works by Flemish Symbolists, James Ensor, Valerius De Saedeleer and George Minne, were selected as the starting point for the project.

Wieger Steenhuis and Jules van Hulst collaborate under the wing of production house Vaktor, which has generously granted them a ‘master traject’ for their artistic development.

The museum exhibition was made possible with the support of the Municipality of Zwolle.

Prototypes of two different installations were presented as stand-alone works at Noorderzon festival 2025 and at Grand Theatre Groningen.
